We were very privileged again this year to have the Ambassador of Finland Pekka Lintu and his family to open our Christmas Bazaar. The ribbon was actually cut by Olivia, the eldest daughter of the Ambassador and Mrs. Laurel Colless.. (See photo on left showing the President of Finn Spark, Marianne Pärssinen, with Ambassador Lintu and family)
Our Bazaar is quite a production! Many hours are spent on many different levels in order to have everything come together for this annual event. All year along a group of ladies create and work on crafts, our baking groups spent countless hours in baking pulla, Christmas stars, cakes and Karelian pies. The Silent Auction has become a very important moneymaker for the bazaar. We are very thankful to many members and friends for donating and getting wonderful items for bidding: there were vacation packages, concerts, art, Iittala glass, beautiful knits, known Finnish magazines such as EEVA, Gloria and Kodin Kuvalehti, and of course, one of the most popular items was a Nokia device that Mrs. Laurel Colless helped us to obtain.
Our Grand Raffle is always a winner. This year, thanks to Scandia World Travel, Hotel Helka and Tallink Silja Line, and SAS for making it so special!
Our members are again this year looking forward to making meaningful donations to benefit the elderly and children’s causes, and give scholarships to educational and cultural institutions in Finland and the U.S. The applications should reach us by January 31, 2009.
This great organization is celebrating its 60th Anniversary on April 18, 2009 at the Embassy of Finland.
